Domino is a game in which players place a tile edge-to-edge against another, with the identifying marks (typically spots or numerals) facing each other. The first player to cover all of the identifiers on the domino wins the round.
The word domino is also used metaphorically to describe a chain reaction or causal linkage — for example, when an earthquake sets off a series of similar or related events.
Hevesh designs her amazing domino art following a version of the engineering-design process. She starts by considering a theme or purpose for the piece, then brainstorms images or words that might relate to that theme. She then creates a schematic of what she wants the design to look like, and then calculates how many tiles she’ll need to accomplish her vision.
From there, she starts laying down the tiles in rows and angular patterns. She sometimes adds a color or other element to her design to give it a more distinctive look. After she’s satisfied with her layout, she begins adding the directional arrows that indicate how the dominoes should fall.
The first domino she places is often the most important because it establishes the direction of play for the rest of the set. Once all the directional arrows are in place, she moves on to the next domino, and so on. The whole process is slow and deliberate — she doesn’t want to accidentally knock over her carefully planned design!
A Domino effect refers to the cumulative effect produced when one thing causes another to topple, as if by an invisible string. The term can be used literally (about a series of actual physical collisions), or metaphorically (to refer to the cause-and-effect links between events in complex systems such as global finance or politics).
From the Latin dominus, meaning “lord” or “master”, or from French domination, which was the oblique case of the Latin dominus et maiesta (“lord and master”). Domino is a variant of the name of an ancient town in Sicily.
In comics, Domino is a mutant who is able to change the laws of probability in her favor. She is also a skilled martial artist, weapons expert, and linguist. She has a long-running romance with Cable and serves as co-leader of the X-Force team.
Domino has a powerful psionic connection to the law of attraction, and can use it to manifest almost anything she desires. She has a tendency to overestimate her abilities and underestimate the power of those around her, particularly those who seek to harm her. She has an uncanny ability to predict future events, which has led her into some dangerous situations. For this reason, she is often a target of those around her, including members of her own team. Despite this, she is a valued member of the X-Force.
